Technologies that collapse distances and help us to make connections do not necessarily bring us close to each other and to the world. They may, in fact, insert greater distances between us and the world. The central educational requirement is for the student to discover an inner connection to the subject matter, but a great deal in our society militates against this. What we need most critically are opportunities for the student to experience the world, in counterbalance to the overwhelming technologies of disconnection. |
