Title
On the marine internet and its potential applications for underwater inter-networking
Abstract
Today, the terrestrial Internet can be easily accessed via various types of terminals almost anytime and anywhere. But this is not yet the case in the ocean, mainly due to huge differences between the terrestrial and marine environments. Although satellites have been used to provide Internet service in the ocean, they are neither cost-effective nor popular due to their inherent weaknesses. Ever-increasing human activities in the ocean require a marine Internet (MI) that can provide handy, reliable and cost-effective high-speed Internet access on and under water in marine environments. For isolated underwater networks, it is necessary to connect them to create large and sophisticated underwater systems. However, underwater inter-networking is still an open issue in the literature. This extended abstract discusses a possible network structure for the MI and its potential applications for underwater inter-networking.
