The combination of ocean acoustical physics and signal processing has been the central theme of our research over the last twenty years. In particular, the thrust of our research has been in matched field processing, waveguide invariant physics, time reversal acoustics and acoustic communications. Common to all these areas is the complexity of the medium so that our research goals have been to either overcome the downside of the complexity or, more interestingly, actually utilize propagation complexity and diversity in the extraction of signal and environmental acoustic information. In cases where complexity renders modeling problematic, we utilize data. We present examples emphasizing this common theme. |
