•A novel and cost-efficient mechanism is proposed to support multi-tenant database as a service (MTDBaaS) in cloud for small businesses, so that high data consolidation, good system scalability and low operational cost could be achieved by service providers.•A database schema is designed to achieve data consolidation and data processing.•A new replacement strategy is proposed to select tables for dropping when system resources should be recollected.•We implement this mechanism by two different approaches, and each of these two approaches has virtues and application scenario of its own.•We validated the feasibility of this mechanism, and evaluated the efficiency of the two implemented approaches through extensive experiments. |
