AbstractIn this letter, we propose an on-demand delay-oriented power-aware routing protocol to reduce the total consumed energy and meet the desired delay requirement in wireless ad hoc networks. In contrast to previous research, we adaptively build different delay-oriented routing entries over several fixed discrete power levels, and select the route with the minimum power level for data delivery. Moreover, we use cross-layer power control strategy to transmit data packets and control packets of network layer and medium access control layer for energy reduction. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms other schemes in terms of network lifetime, average delivery delay and packet delivery ratio.
