Capstone experience: achieving success with an undergraduate research group in speech |
Abstract | ||
---|---|---|
We present an experience paper describing progress made with a Capstone course in Computer Information Systems (CIS) at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) at Manchester that was transformed into an undergraduate research group. When initially created four years ago, the aim of the course was to help students develop sound problem solving skills in information technology by exposing them to a real world research project. We used Automatic Speech Recognition as the field of research, a complex and challenging technology that has a very appealing, hands-on nature where students can see applicable results of their work. UNH Manchester is a commuter college, representing a non-traditional educational setting. Many students work day jobs and thus have limited amount of time they can focus on school. The goal of this project is to pique student interest in science to help further their education beyond the undergraduate experience. |
