Abstract | ||

A model for the power consumption of EDFAs in an optically amplified link is presented. This model accounts for the EDFA pump lasers, accumulated ASE across the full EDFA gain bandwidth, required link Bit Error Ratio as well as covering both non-coherent and coherent modulation formats. An estimate of the lower limit for the energy per bit is provided for a variety of link designs. |
