Title
Design of AWG-based arbitrarily shaped multiplexers
Abstract
An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) has a very well-known configuration, composed of two slab couplers and a grating array; during the past decades, the device has been extensively investigated as frequency (de)multiplexer ((D)MUX), and many different approaches have been proposed to obtain a flat-top response. In the present paper, we separately analyse the functionalities of the input/output slab couplers, showing that a proper parameter selection can shape the filter transmittance. In addition, the device can be used in all-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), dense OFDM (D-OFDM) and interleaved OFDM (IL-OFDM) systems. A single slab coupler with 4 input/output ports can be designed as a 90° hybrid, using different tapering widths to compensate the loss non-uniformity due to the diffraction effect.
