Title
Service provision for incompatible polarization satellite assets via wavefront multiplexing techniques
Abstract
In this paper, we identify polarization format as a key factor for improving satellite communications provision. Our study shows that polarization incompatibility is no longer a hard boundary between the circularly polarized (CP) terminals and linearly polarized (LP) transponders. The catalyst for this advancement is the use of Wavefront Multiplexing/Demultiplexing (WF muxing/demuxing). Satellite communications links with incompatible polarization can be made possible, which breaks the barriers among many existing satellite communications terminals and assets. Satellite communications enabled by WF muxing/demuxing become more flexible and manageable. A few notable benefits brought by WF muxing techniques to grouped transponders include coherent power combining and dynamic power allocations. The proposed methods not only allow existing satellite communications operation to continue but also enable new opportunities for satellite communications service provision.
