Title
Multirate Filters: An Overview
Abstract
Multirate filtering techniques arewidely usedin bothsampling rateconversion systems andinconstructing filters withequalinput andoutput rates inthecasewheretheuseofa conventional methodbecomesextremely costly. Thepurpose of thispaperistwofold. First, thispapergives ashortreview on designing properdigital filters thatareuseful inproviding the desired sampling-rate conversion between theoutput andinput signals. Second, thispapershortly reviews on how toapply multirate technigies as wellas complementary filters for constructing digital filters incases wheretheimplementation ofa conventional filter becomes, duetoa toohuge arithmetic complexity andtheeffects offinite wordlength effect, solarge thatthisfilter isnotpossible toconstruct inpractice. Inthe secondcase, when usingboth multirate filtering and complementary filters enable onetosharetheoverall filtering taskbetween several simplified low-order sub-filters thatoperate atthelowestpossible sampling ratesandhavesignificantly relaxed design constraints. Duetothese facts, theresulting filter hassignificant reductions intheoverall complexity aswellin finite word-length effects.
