•Continuous and discretized methods for solving IMRT inverse problems are proposed.•The positivity of solution is proved in both well- and ill-posed inverse problems.•The convergence of solution is proved in well-posed inverse problems.•Either method can produce a solution with a low cost even in the inconsistent case.•A passible IMRT plan can be quickly obtained in both well- and ill-posed cases. |
