Abstract
•We study learning through reading (not participating in) e-discussions.•Students read either a disputative or a deliberative argumentive discussion.•The disputative discourse style led to lower knowledge performance scores.•Students in deliberative and control conditions did equally well.•Reading behavior measures could not explain differences in learning outcomes.
