Title
A Framework for Generic Exercises with Mathematical Content
Abstract
The idea of using randomly generated mathematical exercises in Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA) is well-known. Variable values can be used to create different versions of an exercise, each time a student looks at it. This approach helps to avoid plagiarism between students and leads to discussions about the concepts of an exercise rather than discussions about its solution. Furthermore students are encouraged to work more than once on an exercise during training sessions. However, when looking closer at systems that offer realisations of this approach, we found them inadequate to meet our requirements. The number of functions that can be used to create variable values is often very limited and also restricted to numerical values. Moreover, in many cases extensibility via plug-ins or integration of external systems is missing. This paper presents a flexible and extensible framework for the random generation of exercises that goes beyond the available implementations. The randomly generated elements of an exercise can be of various types like numbers, strings or sets, and external systems can be used to determine their values. We have implemented the framework inside the e-assessment system JACK, which is used at the University of Duisburg-Essen for diagnostic, formative and summative assessment in introductory courses, and we have created an exercise pool with more than 600 exercises that are all based on variable content. This paper reports on the concepts of randomized mathematical exercises, the technical realization offered by our framework, and our experiences from practical use.
