Energy efficiency has been a major objective of the communications research community for many years, but recently there has been a major focus on energy efficient systems and networks. There have been a number of major international research projects and initiatives, notably the International Green Touch Initiative, which has studied how energy consumption can be reduced significantly in both wired and wireless networks. The continual growth in the use of both the wired and wireless internet is a major challenge for reducing energy consumption and to meet the goals of the United Nations Paris 2015 Conference on Climate Change. |
