•Object-based approach to building outline extraction from ALS point cloud data is presented.•Potential for transferability was tested by applying the developed approach to an ISPRS Benchmarking.•The approach is automatic and is based on a rule set developed under the framework of eCognition using Cognitional Networking Language.
