Title
Interplay of Link Quality Estimation and RPL Performance: An Experimental Study.
Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly evolving from a vision to reality. Practical realisations of IoT systems will require experimentation and trials on real testbeds to ensure proper functioning and scalability under realistic conditions and environments. To this aim, the availability of IoT testbeds will be of paramount importance to foster the future development of IoT solutions. In this paper we present the Pisa IoT Testbed, with the aim of providing a platform for rapid prototyping of IoT solutions, as well as to allow their assessment at different levels, from network to application. To show the capabilities of our testbed, in this paper we present a preliminary experimental study of the influence of different link quality assessment strategies on the performance of wireless sensor networks adopting RPL as routing protocol. In particular, we evaluate the trade-offs between passive and active link monitoring strategies in terms of overheads and responsiveness to link quality variations.
