•Ankle muscle co-contractions were assessed in 15 females and 15 males during gait.•SGA was applied to sEMG signals to test gender-related differences between groups.•No significant difference was detected in on/off instants of TA/GL co-contractions.•All the co-contractions occurred in higher number of strides in females.•Results reflect a female need for a higher level of ankle-joint stabilization. |
