•New mixed-integer linear programming model for the cell formation problem.•Formulation with a variable number of cells and grouping efficacy fractional objective.•Obtained optimal solutions for 63 of the 67 considered problem instances.•Found several new solutions unknown before.•Computational times are greatly decreased comparing to the state-of-art approaches.
