•The number of persuasive principles in mental health BCSSs is related to effectiveness.•Including more dialogue support features leads to more effective HBCSSs.•Specific principles work well together (e.g. tunneling and tailoring).•Adding another principle can diminish effectiveness (e.g. adding reduction).•Higher adherence did not lead to higher effect-sizes. |
