•A genetic algorithm for solving DFJS scheduling problems is proposed.•The algorithm outperforms all prior algorithms on solving DFJS problems.•Develop an incomplete representation scheme (chromosome) for encoding a solution.•Develop load-balance methods for decoding chromosomes to generate good solutions.
