•ABC based LFC for three area power system is presented.•System response of single PID controller for multiple interconnected generators is analyzed.•ABC, GA, GSA, PSO and EP optimization techniques as tuning strategy is comparatively investigated.•Five different load disturbance cases were demonstrated to show the efficiency and robustness of the proposed control strategy.•Exhaustive search mechanism based on interval halving method has been used to verify the performance of ABC. |
