Abstract
•We provide a realistic formulation for circuitry design of heat exchangers.•Derivative-free optimization algorithms are used to solve this problem.•Near-optimal solutions are found using a small number of simulations.•We present a systematic comparison of five derivative-free optimization algorithms.•We use constraint programming methods to verify the results for small coils.
