•A combination of OBCD and a detailed analysis of DSMs over time reveal subtle changes hinting to intensified or diminished mineral exploitation.•Detected changes can be linked to on-site activities reflecting the conflict situation responsible for certain trends in minerals extraction.•Results providing relevant information for potential mitigation strategies and peace building.
