Multi-domain Video over Software-Defined Networking (MDVSDN)
Abstract
Supporting end-to-end quality of services for realtime interactive video applications such as videoconferencing and distance learning across the Internet requires a collection of independent networks or domains to work together to route packets between source and destination. Routing packets across the Internet using a feasible path-a path that meets the quality of service (QoS) attributes of video application is hard because the quality of service attributes such as bandwidth, delay, and jitter are not natively supported by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) which is the de facto routing protocol for the Internet. Although there may be multiple feasible paths between source and destination, BGP is unable to explore alternative paths because BGP advertises a single best path-feasible path, decreasing network flexibility. This paper provides three contributions to the literature on providing end-to-end QoS for real-time interactive video applications across the Internet. This paper presents Multi-Domain Video over Software-Defined Networking (MDVSDN), a network architecture that selects end-to-end QoS path for real-time video application across independent domains. This paper describes the architectural features of MDVSDN. This paper presents results of implementing the prototype of MDVSDN and evaluates behavior of MDVSDN using message complexity. The message complexity of MDVSDN is linear.
