A quartic mixture distribution and its application to ML decoder based analysis of FSO systems
Abstract
In general, a free space optical (FSO) communication system is prone to three main impairments, 1) atmospheric turbulence induced fading, 2) additive noise, and 3) the random radial displacement of optical beam. The commonly adopted statistical models for these random impairments are Gamma-Gamma distribution, Gaussian distribution, and the Rayleigh distribution, respectively. Considering the aforementioned random impairments, we characterize a new quartic mixture random polynomial with three independent variables in this paper. In particular, we derive the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the new quartic mixture random variable. Later on, it has been shown that the newly characterized mixture random variable can be effectively used in the error performance analysis of various FSO communication systems eg., single channel FSO link and cascaded FSO system etc. Moreover, by utilizing the derived PDF and CDF, we can easily obtain the expressions of average error probabilities for different optical wireless communication (OWC) systems with arbitrary constellations.
