•Effect of fire protection systems on domino scenarios has been modelled using a Bayesian network technique.•Optimal allocation of fire protection systems has been performed by extending the Bayesian network to an influence diagram.•Optimal decisions obtained via application of maximized expected utility are in agreement with a graph theoretic approach's.
