•Mapping burned area using Landsat time series was studied.•Harmonic model and breakpoint identification were used by the algorithm.•Landsat burned area had a higher accuracy than MODIS burned area product.•Small burn scars detected by Landsat were omitted by MODIS burned area product.•The algorithm is robust against clouds and missing lines. |
