Title
MODIS-derived EVI, NDVI and WDRVI time series to estimate phenological metrics in French deciduous forests.
Abstract
•The phenology of 50 French deciduous forests was analysed by MODIS-based vegetation indices time series between 2001 and 2012.•Start- and End-of-Season were estimated by modelling yearly time series of VI by an asymmetric double logistic function.•NDVI, EVI and WDRVI spectral indices were tested as descriptors of phenology comparing them with RENECOFOR ground observations.•Estimates based on VI from at-the-ground reflectance MODIS calibrated images worked better than those from the MOD13Q product.•Start of Season estimates are more accurate (±10 days) than the End of Season ones (±23 days).
