•We describe a practical routing problem arising in the distribution of cookies.•The problem is a generalization of the open vehicle routing problem (OVRP).•At some locations the load is dropped off and delivered by another carrier.•Real data were provided by our industrial partner and its carriers.•The proposed algorithm leads to the best known solutions for the classical problem (OVRP). |
