•Emergency planning information is a type of health information that older adults frequently have to manage.•Older adult individuals differ in whether or not they involve others in managing emergency planning information.•Emergency planning information is often incomplete, out-of-date, and not in locations readily visible to emergency responders.•Incorporating emergency planning information into health IT could support health information management for older adults.
