•A system is proposed to classify broad leaf and narrow leaf plants at high speed.•The developed SVM classifier greatly improves accuracy over NDVI based classifiers.•Accuracy improved further using raw reflected intensities and kernel tricks.•Overall plant discrimination accuracy of 97% achieved. |
