•The paper introduces a collaborative robotic cyber-physical system (CRCPS).•The basic elements and functional requirements of CRCPS are introduced on which modes and effects of cyber-attack are studied.•A secure framework is proposed for CRCPS based on cyber-attack categorization and the possible damaging effects on working of CRCPS.•The mitigation strategy includes enhanced data security at adaptor nodes and development of an intelligent system health monitoring module.•A simplified verification is carried out for the proposed security framework on a teleoperation benchmark (NeCS-Car). |
