•This paper compares an early aspecific vaccine with a late specific vaccine.•We derive analytical conditions for this comparison.•We introduce hybrid vaccination strategies that combine both vaccine types.•We find that hybrid strategies are often optimal.•Numerical results show that hybrid strategies can reduce infections by 50%. |
