•A novel adaptive e-learning model in Big Data environment is proposed to improve the quality of learning process.•An efficient learner e-assessment method is provided to determine learners’ prerequisites toward the educational resource objectives.•We propose MapReduce-based GA to retrieve the FEO based on the learner prerequisites the educational resource objectives.•By simulating ant behaviors on the FEO, an adaptive PLP contains the adequate learning content is constructed using the proposed MapReduce-based ACO.•We present how Big Data and SNA transform e-learning paradigm. The proposed MapReduce-based SNA determines social indicators of learner that provide an appropriate learning rhythm. |
