•Consider collaboration capacity as a critical competitive factor for service evaluation and selection.•Define and extract five types of service social relationships, and quantify service synergy effect from the perspective of relation strength.•Develop a novel service selection optimization model based on synergy effect.•The results of simulation experiment have proved the validity and advantages of our model and algorithm.
