•A methodology is proposed for the threat analysis of IPv6 transition technologies.•Our methodology amends a previous one based on the STRIDE approach.•The previous method was complemented with two levels.•The viability of our method is proven on the comprehensive threat analysis of DNS64.•Its effectiveness is proven by the systematic uncovering of all the known threats. |
