•It is important to evaluate usability of mHealth apps throughout the development process.•Existing studies have evaluated apps’ usability at a certain single stage of development and/or without using a solid theoretical framework.•We presented methodologies for operationalizing the Stratified View of Health IT Usability Evaluation Framework and a case study to illustrate the use of the methods for a mHealth app development.•The operationalization of an evidence-based framework in the context of mHealth technology can provide a methodological approach for future mHealth apps’ development. |
