•A new algorithm to extract piglet ear base temperature by using thermal image processing.•Identification of piglet head part by using SVM based on contour features.•Ear base points are located based on the shape features of piglet head part.•More than 97% of the testing images whose ear base temperatures can be obtained with the error less than 0.4 °C. |
