•Algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) is an alternative method of filtered back projection (FBP).•3D Total variation (TV) minimization enhances the quality of the image reconstructed by ART.•3D TV minimization can be applied Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) imaging.•ART + 3D TV minimization lowers radiation dose level in DBT imaging.
