Approach for Process Control in Additive Manufacturing Through Layer-Wise Analysis with 3-Dimensional Pointcloud Information
Abstract
This work presents a suitable solution for capturing process data of an additive manufacturing process. Process control is necessary to increase the productivity and acceptance for these manufacturing techniques. Wrong adjusted parameters of an additive manufacturing process may cause in inaccurate manufacturing results and therefore the potential of additive manufacturing methods is underestimated. This approach uses a modified Fused Filament Fabrication system with integrated image sensors. The stereoscopic camera system captures 3d information about the object after every finished manufactured layers and the originated pointcloud is compared with the previously generated path planning, which is called G-code. The path planning is the result of the slicing process, which is absolutely necessary for every additive manufacturing process, and describes the movements for the additive manufacturing machine. The G-code is used in this approach for a reconstruction of the complete object layer by layer. The virtual reconstructed object represents the ideal manufacturing form and provides a comparing with the captured 3d information. Challenges are the G-code interpreting and the transformation of the Cartesian coordinate systems to a reference system. For this purpose a special transformation target is developed and a reference measurement system is used for evaluation.
