Title
Exploring the performance of prototype filters for broadband PLC
Abstract
The physical layer (PHY) of IEEE Std. 1901-2010 (IEEE 1901) recommends Wavelet OFDM as medium access technique for broadband communication over the power line network. In this standard, the proposed filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) system is based on the Extended Lapped Transform (ELT) and since the transmitting and the receiving filters are obtained from a prototype filter, a ‘mother filter’ to get their coefficients is also included. In this work, the theoretical expression to calculate the values of for the mother filter given in the standard is presented. Besides, this paper is aimed at studying the performance achieved by means of the prototype filters recommended by IEEE 1901, and at comparing them with some other different filters. Specifically, we study the effects of the stopband attenuation and the transition band width on the system performance in terms of symbol-error-rate (SER) and throughput, assuming an in-home PLC scenario.
