•We introduce a new method based on Joint Recurrence Analysis to study speech rhythm.•We estimate the degree of coordination between syllables and word-level prominence.•We elicited narrations in two Romance languages, two Germanic languages and Polish.•Estimated coordination is stronger in Germanic languages than in Romance languages.•The coordinative aspects of speech production are of relevance for rhythmic typology. |
