The paper is aimed at the enhancement of the starting performance of single phase line-start permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). These are characterized by a tapered air gap that enables to overcome their starting limitation. The study is initiated by a 2D finite element analysis (FEA)-based investigation of the electromagnetic features of a single phase line-start PMSM. Then, the FEA is extended to a geometrical sizing of the machine. The FEA is achieved by the investigation of the effect of the variation of the relative position of a two notches in the rotor poles, with emphasis on the increase of the cogging torque mean value. This approach makes it possible the enhancement of the machine starting capability. |
