•An as-rigid-as-possible technique is proposed for physically plausible deformation.•An embedded graph of oriented particles ensures the efficacy of the simulation.•A variational implicit formulation ensures the stability of the simulation.•The material stiffness is independent of the iteration count and time step size.•Hundreds of deformable models can be simulated robustly in real time.
