•We develop three models to solve a wireless sensor network barrier coverage problem.•They are Integer Non-Linear Program, Integer Linear Program, Simulation Optimisation.•The models are the most elaborate reported in the literature.•Optimisation-via-simulation model is used for the first time to solve this problem.•We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the three models. |
