•Consider a hybrid fleets of gas and electric vehicles for the routing problem.•Propose a bi-objective heterogeneous routing problem with multiple driving ranges.•Develop an enhanced multi-directional local search to approximate the Pareto set.•Develop a large neighborhood search to solve each of the two objectives.•Use real data to estimate some of the parameters used in the optimization model.
