•This paper investigates a novel bi-objective BSP on BPMs with different power.•Employing problem-specific knowledge, a bi-objective ACO is developed.•Experimental results exhibit superiority of BOACO and are statistically verified.•Simulations demonstrate the tradeoff between makespan and energy consumption.
