Although the thoughts and practices of alternative energy has been around for many years, in recent years, the world has been increasingly looking towards it more intensely. Alternative energy can refer to forms of energy that do not increase humanity's carbon footprint. It can include things such as nuclear facilities, hydroelectric power, natural gas, “clean coal”, solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. The underlying inspiration for turning to alternative energy is the benefits such as social, economic and environmental benefits that will be discussed under the sustainability portion of this report. For this project, alternative energy sources along with other electrical and a non-electrical components were utilized to power a load, consequently simulating a home power mainly with alternative energy sources (solar and wind), while still being connected to the main grid for backup purposes. |
