•A two-stage integer programming model was implemented for scheduling the leagues.•The problems solved are variations on the well-known Traveling Tournament Problem.•The teams’ away-game travel distances were cut by more than 30%.•Our schedules have been used by the leagues since the 2014–2015 season.•The success of the schedules has increased the use of OR in the leagues processes. |
