•Chilean manufacturing is studied from a quantitative perspective for decision-making.•The influential factors of the Chilean manufacturing outputs are determined.•Levels of technical efficiency for each industrial sector of the sample are established.•A ranking of technical efficiency for the Chilean manufacturing industry is provided.•An innovative formulation for the Chilean manufacturing industry is linked to “Industry 4.0”.•Our research has been connected to data-driven decision making in supply chains.
